According to a report from CBSNews, Adam Levine from Maroon 5 was well aware of the fact he’d take considerable heat for performing at the half-time show this weekend. This comes after the NFL announced players had to stand during the national anthem or stay in the locker room in protest.
It all began with the Colin Kaepernick controversy in which the football player took a knee during the anthem, and stirred up one of the biggest non-controversies of 2018. Since then, many in the black and hip-hop community have condemned rapper Travis Scott’s decision to perform there.
Adam Levine, in the same vein, said it took a lot of thinking to truly understand whether he was comfortable with performing at the Superbowl. When speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Maroon 5’s frontman said, “we expected it, we’d like to move on from it, and speak through the music.”
Frazier also said he spoke with many individuals before finally making their decision. Levine explained that after he “silenced all of the noise,” he realized what was right for him, and then made his choice accordingly.

Reportedly, Cardi B and Rihanna declined to perform at the Superbowl this year due to the NFL blackballing Kaepernick from the league. The former 49ers quarterback took a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality.
One petition which gathered over 100,000 signatures asked for Maroon 5 to drop out of the show. Interestingly, things have been a little different with the half-time show this year, likely due to the Colin Kaepernick controversy last year and the subsequent fall out of support from the entertainment industry.
A consequence of the contention is that the Superbowl organizers didn’t hold a press conference as they normally do. According to Levine, the fact Scott chose to perform there is quite controversial, especially considering Travis is one of the biggest stars in hip-hop right now.

In fact, Levine described, Scott would mark the first time the Superbowl has really had a hip-hop presence in this way. Either way, Maroon 5 is a good choice for this year’s Superbowl; the group has sold over 50 million records worldwide and has had 9 number one singles, including their most recent, “Girls Like You,” which has over 2,000,000,000 views on YouTube thus far.
