Iker had his debut for Bilbao Athletic (reserve team of Athletic Bilbao) in the Segunda Division B in January 2009. At the time, he was only 16 years and 16 days old.

On July 30, 2009, Muniain appeared in his first match for Athletic Bilbao in a UEFA Europa League qualifying match against Swiss’ club BSC Young Boys. Iker substituted Gaizka Toquero in the 59th minute of the game.

He first performed for the Spanish U-21 team on February 8, 2011 in a match against Denmark.
