Since Jason Momoa is tall, he is 6”4 to be exact, and muscular, many people have been wondering what he does to achieve this physique. As he also has the perfect physique for most sports, his fans want to know if he ever played any sports, like football.

Though Momoa would likely be good at it, he never played football. The Aquaman star may have grown up in America and attended college there, but he never took up the sport that originated there. He instead does traditional workouts and goes rock climbing.

Continue reading to find out how Jason Momoa became so fit and what he does instead of playing football.

Pacific Islanders in Football

Jason Momoa was born in NānākuliHonoluluHawaii in 1979, but moved to Norwalk, Iowa with his mother when he was six months old. His mother, Coni Lemke, is German, Irish and Native American and his father, Joseph Momoa, is Samoan and Hawaiian.

This is notable because the island of Samoa is actually nicknamed “Football Island”. The island gets its nickname because so many professional NFL football players are of Samoan descent.

There are 40 active, Samoan football players in the NFL currently. This is likely because Samoans are not only big and bulky, but respectful, as that is what their culture values.

Pacific Islanders in general, which Jason Momoa is one, are known to be big. This may come from generations of farming and labor required by male Pacific Islanders.

Pacific Islanders tend to also be good at football because they have been built for combat. They have evolved from warriors and have not lost that big-boned structure through evolution.

All of this makes it more surprising that Momoa does not play football since he is built for the sport and his ancestors are known for being good at the sport. Jason Momoa, however, tends to focus on other types of workouts and hobbies.

Jason Momoa’s Workouts

As Jason Momoa is 6”4, 110kg and only 17% body fat, it may be surprising to some that he says he hates going to the gym. He hates it because he does not like training for vanity, even though a lot of his roles require him to.

He says, “These roles kill me because I’m not into that s***. But it’s my job to become the character I’m playing. You want to look good, sure, but you have to do so much for the part that you get injured. You have to protect yourself. Train for function rather than how you look, man.”

So, unless Momoa is training for a film or television series, he typically completes his workouts outside of the gym.

He does this by rock climbing. He has even incorporated rock climbing into his workout regimen for his roles like in Aquaman.

He enjoys rock climbing as he says, “It’s like a dance or a martial art – you’re in this flow. The way your body moves feels comfortable, and it feels alive.” He further says it is good for his mind as well.

Rock climbing has actually been proven to significantly reduce depression and is good for boosting grip in your hands and feet. It is also a full-body workout great for fat-loss. So all around, rock climbing is an excellent workout and Momoa actually enjoys it.

He does still do traditional workouts, often made personally for him. For example, on the Aquaman set, he was trained by a former WWE wrestler, Mada Abdelhamid

On his training team, Momoa also had an assistant, a massage therapist and a dietician to help him with his diet or if he got injured.

So, although Jason Momoa does not play football, he does do one type of sport.
